Resolve? No. Plan? Yes!!

It’s a tale as old as time…new year brings declarations of all the wonderful things we’re going to change – lose weight, save money, get a promotion and so it goes.

Then January 2nd comes along and we’re eating Twinkies, while online shopping with our almost maxed out credit card while at work, pretending to listen to a conference call.

This year, I decided I’m going to look at the new year in a new way.  I made a list of things I wanted to change.  I made a plan of how I’m going to improve on my weakness and enhance my strengths (woohoo for actually using something I learned in college!!).

While it is admittedly possible I’ve put too many things on my list, I have many areas in my plan of action but a quick run down is as follows:

Mind
*Going back to school to pursue an entirely new field of study
*I just submitted my goal for the Goodreads 2012 Reading Challenge. 20 books this year!
*A little less E! and a little more actual news…

Body
*No more being late on skin cancer checks!!
*Add one healthy eating/drinking habit at a time. I’m starting with reducing soda intake and gulping down water no matter how little I like it!!
*Schedule blocks of time to workout (and stick to it!!!)

Soul
*Continue attending church (We’ve just found one we like)
*Find a volunteer position at church
*Complete Bible in 90 Days challenge
*Regular community service as a family

Home
*Create daily, weekly & monthly routines that allow weekends to be less housework focused and more family-focused
*Continue our progress paying down credit card debt
*More Daddy/Daughter time which equals Mommy-quiet-time!!!! Win-win!!

This list is not comprehensive as I hope it will evolve as the year progresses. 2011 was a hard year for me personally as I slowly let myself go..not physically but mentally and emotionally. I cared about myself less and less. Finally a good friend reminded me that until I made sure I loved myself and make myself happy, I can’t expect anyone else to. To me, the start of a new year brings me an opportunity to begin that journey.

Feel free to share any goals you’ve made for the coming year. If you’ve blogged about it – share the link!! I’d love to help support those of you who need it in the coming year with accomplishing our goals and welcome anyone who feels compelled to cheer me on as well!!

Let’s make 2012 the best year we’ve had yet!!

2011 In Review

The end of 2011 is coming fast and I’ve taken some time in the past week or so to really think about how I’d like to improve in various areas in 2012. I’d realized I hadn’t taken much time to reflect on the happenings in 2011.

The year started slow. When we started 2011, this was our Brooke:
Breakfast with Brooke

and now she’s a little kid showing no signs of baby anymore!

As spring rolled around, we did some traveling within Texas. We checked out Brenham where we went to a fun 50s diner, a fun center where Brooke & Keith drove go-carts and Brooke bowled for the first time. Then we made a trip to Sea World San Antonio, which was great fun!!
Sea World collageLast we went to Austin where our hotel had the best Brooke-friendly pool! We spent hours enjoying it!

Shortly after our Austin trip, we found out we’d be making our biggest change of the year. Moving from Texas to Tennessee as Keith got a new job with the University of Tennessee Athletic Ticket Office!!! So we packed up our apartment, made the 14 hour drive and arrived at our new house!

The adjustment to new state, new home, new jobs, new daycares and the hiccups along the way made the first little while a bit rough. But we got through it and have had some great moments here in Knoxville too!! Our first Tennessee football game…

While not actually IN Knoxville, we took a road trip up to Michigan where we celebrated Brooke & Keith’s birthday!

Brooke and I took advantage of actual fall-like weather in October (unlike we’d known in Houston) and enjoyed the outdoors!

A highlight for Keith was his trip to East Lansing for the Wisconsin game. College Game Day was there and we saw him on TV quite a few times!! To top it off, the football game came right down to the wire with a crazy play to end the game with an MSU win!!!

Brooke and I took another road trip to Michigan where we celebrated Thanksgiving and Aunt Jess’ Baby’s Party (aka Baby Shower)

Before we knew it, Christmas hustle and bustle was in full swing. It started with the arrival of Twinkle, our very own Elf on the Shelf.

Then we had the UT Athletic Department Christmas Party where Brooke got to meet TWO Santas!!

Then before we knew it Santa had visited, we were all spoiled silly and that leads us to today. Ticking away the final hours of 2011.

Here’s to saying goodbye to the past and embracing the future. Happy New Year!

Twinkle’s Busy Week

We started a new tradition at our house this Christmas.Elf on the Shelf

Brooke named her Twinkle and she has had quite the week. She’s built puzzles, made some popcorn for a late night snack, played a game of Chutes & Ladders, got ready for a day at the beach and taught a class on Christmas and more!!
